The study on entrepreneurship in Russia is part of a bigger research project, which also includes China and India.
Start Date: 2002
Completion Date: current
Project Description:
The goal of this research project is to understand why the level of entrepreneurship varies so much around the world. There has been particularly large cross-country variation in growth in recent years in less developed countries. The starting point is that entrepreneurship is likely to be a crucial determinant for successful growth and development. Understanding the determinants of the vigor of entrepreneurship in certain countries may be particularly important to understanding why some countries grow and develop faster than others.
The factors under examination are grouped into five categories:
- Financial factors (e.g., provision of liquidity);
- Factors related to government policy and institutions (e.g. laws protecting property rights, expectations of law enforcement, corruption, predatory activity by local governments, and bureaucratic obstacles);
- Cultural factors (e.g., religion, ethnicity, family and community history, social network, and attitude of population towards entrepreneurs);
- Individual factors (e.g., connectedness to social networks, attitude toward risk, past work experience, intellectual performance, extra-curricular activities and interests);
- Factors related to the economic environment (e.g., standard control variables).
The dataset consists of household surveys, firm surveys, and information on relevant institutions and policies at the local, regional, and national level.
